I never tried Uni. It loox like baby poop.
Unagi used to be my fave but my friend that used to take me out for sushi all the time would get like 6 pieces each and other things everytime we went like once a week. After several years of stuffing my face with Unagi I grew sick of it. I will still have a little once in a while but it's not my fave anymore.
My absolute fave now is the Philly roll with broiled salmon skin on inside and tobiko and sesame seeds on outside.
My second fave is a maki roll with tamago & shitake mushrooms with tobiko on outside.
I also love all the other Japanese taste treat like teriyaki beef & chicken and shrimp & veggie tempura, miso soup. And SAKE!!!!! Ah ha ha!!!!! (Laughs all evil & wicked like.)

ok....now keep in mind that Uni is my personal favorite, and any sushi session should ideally end up with uni for me =)

I had some friends that I used to go to sushi with, who wouldn't call it baby poop....they had a far more accurate description.....cat vomit.

and well.....they are right....it DOES look like cat vomit

Uni. I've really tried, REALLY TRIED, to like. Maybe I just don't have the pallet for it. I keep hearing it tastes like the ocean. I just can't get past the texture. Maybe I haven't had the good stuff?

My favorite, yellow tail. Absolute perfection is baby yellowtail sashimi. It has the texture of butter and is just heaven!!

          I like yellow tail.

My friend Gary likes Uni. He likes it in two pieces or sometimes he has them put it in sake or some kind of drink that is supposed to be an aphodisiac. Just watching him consume it makes me want to be ill. (Shivers UH!!!) Like grody to the max for shar!!! WAY!!! & TOTALLY!!! Gag me with the uni.

No offense intended inna. If you like it good for you. I'm just sayin' I can't bring myself to even try it.

a real sushi session for me would start with uni and end with uni.
At my local favorite place I like to sit at the counter and have uni(neta) to start with and then akagai!!!
The guy makes an incredible uni futo-maki that I always end with in bliss!!! It is packed with it*

All of those Western,etc.., new style rolls sound so gOOd! I can't wait to cross paths with them.

Definitely unagi, good old albacore, and spicy tuna. Im simple. :) Ofcourse, any crazy spicy or deep fried combination of all three is always amazing.

Hamachi toro nigiri is my hands down favorite. Like butta indeed!

Also love a fat plate of perfectly seared tuna sea steak. Mmmmmmm!

I often crave a roll that's got deep fried shrimp and spicy tuna inside with hamachi and seared tuna on the outside, drenched in sweet unagi sauce, tobiko and green onions.

We used to go to a place that would deep fry a roll covered in tempura batter with salmon, cream cheese, unagi, and cucumber inside and cover it with tobiko, green onions, and one of the tastiest special garlic sauces ever. That used to be my absolute favorite, but we don't go to that joint anymore. I don't usually like cream cheese in my roll, but since the roll was deep fried, the cream cheese would get all melty and divine. I miss those rolls!

As for uni, I've tried it several times - even one place that one of our friends declared had the "best ever" uni. Never could stand it...but more power to those of you who love it. ; )

Salmon toro, Zuri , Bluefin tuna, all delicious slabs of cold dead fish!

mmmm...dessert nigiri. that makes me think of these tasty little things called "drops" I used to get - balls of real crab meat covered in slabs of your choice (I think I usually got albacore), then covered liberally with this delicious sweet almost peanutty sauce and unagi sauce. that was always my favorite "one last thing" ; )

By far my favorites are maguro and toro nagiri. Simple and delicious.I believe, if you stuff too much crap together, it muddles the flavors. Keep it simple with rice, tuna , soy and wasabi. That's the best!!

Huge hamachi fan, but dig uni and awabi too. As far as the uni goes, might I suggest first taking a bit of uni off the top instead of the whole nigiri piece at once...it'll help with both the texture and taste. I used to work in an italian restuarant, and the boss made with sit down with him and bowl full of urchin...he musta ate 10 whole urchins. Just eating a little at a time helped me get through it way back when...now no problems powering down a bunch of it.

I so love sushi that it makes it difficult to choose just one so I will list a few. I really enjoy albacore tuna, yellowtail, toro, and uni.

Mirugai, but it has to be so fresh that it bounces when the Sushi San slaps it on the board. It should be tender, crisp, and slightly sweet. If it's limp, don't bother eating it. I also like a hamachi negi handroll with tobiko and quail egg on top. I jokingly refer to it as an ice cream cone.

        1. Uni (at Nihon they make something I call "spooni" that is uni in a spoon with flying fish eggs and a quail egg and is a little taste of heaven) - to me Uni tastes like the ocean and flowers put together.
        2. Ikura with Quail egg. I had fresh Ikura once at Sushi Ran and it was 1,000 times better than "treated" Ikura (don't know what they treat it with).
        3. Saba - I've been eating saba since I was 6 years old and it's still soooooo good! Saba is slightly treated as well - I think it might be marinated or brushed with brine - my favorite sushi chef told me but I can't remember. I used to eat it fresh from the ocean when I went ocean fishing and damn that was amazing!

I prefer sashimi to nigiri. I don't use soy sauce because, for me, it pollutes the taste of love.

I am a very picky person so I am so surprised at how much I LOVE sushi.

I was so scared for the longest time and just stuck to cali rolls, but now I LOVE unagi and tried lobster rolls the other day which just melted in my mouth.

The lobster rolls had lobster, fried shrimp, avacado, cucumber, and some weird orange creamy and spicy sauce. It was so amazing.

i came up with one at my local sushi place the other day...

they offer an "Idaho Maki" with tempura sweet potato and cream cheese, so i added in cucumber on the inside, and topped it with unagi, avacado and tobiko with some spicy mayo and eel sauce...INCREDIBLE!! literally melts in your mouth, and tastes oh-so-yummy!!

if you have anything similar at your local favorite place, i'd recommend building something similar.

          My Favorite Sushi!?!?!
          Wow!
          Where do I begin!?! LOL!!

Without a doubt my all time favorites are:
Ama Ebi...which comes in two parts....Raw Sweet Shrimp Sushi and the Deep Fried Prawn Heads...served up with some quality Japanese Beer or Saki or a Saki Bomb? Phenominal (Actually I use the Ama Ebi "Test" to judge a sushi restaurant...if a sushi bar doesn't offer it..then it is either an ok or a poor sushi place...JUST my opinion :) )

          Salmon Handskin Roll
          Uni
          Unagi (Love, Love, LOVE Eel!)
          Toro
          Hamachi
          Volcano Roll
          Mexican Roll
          California Roll
and hands down with out a doubt....
          Fugu!!! :)
