not the best PLACES, but these items are pretty cool:

baked alaska roll @ canal club (venice)
tempura roll @ cinch (santa monica)
crunchy roll @ matsuda (studio city--actually everything's good here, i just really dig the crunchy roll)

          LA:
Have you ever had the crunchy roll at Sushi Cafe (Bev./La Cienega). I bet it would give any other crunch roll a (ahem) roll for it's money.

Where is cinch, and what's it like?

how late are they open? that neighborhood is really bad for me, i usually feel like committing homicide when i'm over there--terrible drivers. i hope they're open late when there's fewer people on the road there--that friggin' mall doesn't help either!

<Where is cinch, and what's it like? >

cinch is in santa monica (1519 wilshire) and it's a "fusion" restaurant, so they serve sushi in addition to other pacific-rim-oriented stuff. the food is EXCELLENT, but you pay for it. it's a gorgeous room.

More in the Westlake/Agoura area but "The Landing Sushi Bar and Grill" is really yummy. My favorites are the "911 roll" and the "Kelly Roll" (spicy albacore , tempura asparagus and avocado)

Tsurugi's is great...palnning on going there tommorow night. I'm been a regular customer of theirs for 10years and prefer it much more than Sakura. Another place just opened in SLO called Unago, went there once and pretty good too. Still heart's with Tsurugi's...

Saito's (belltown) my alltime favorite. sit at the bar and Saito-san will hook you up.
    Mashiko (west seattle)
    Chiso (fremont)
Shiro's (belltown) quality, but crowded, and Shiro-san is a grump.
Cafe Chinoise (queen anne, madison park, wallingford, ID)
Musashi's (wallingford) good but get takeout, always packed.
Toyoda (lake city) spendy, but worth it
Blue C Sushi (fremont) boat-style, but on conveyor belts. Cheap, fun.
lots more that are good, but these are the standouts.

Kamakura! Faith is still running the place, even though her husband passed away a few years ago. She's a sweet older Japanese woman who makes you feel you are in her home. She keeps the prices down, too. Always full with people patiently waiting for tables or take-away; it's worth it. I think they're closed on Mondays.

Sushi Nami, Alpharetta, GA - phenomenal and the ambience is NYC sheik.

Mori House, Suwanee, GA - small bar and my personal favorite. Very personable chefs and waitress and wonderful sushi, (a hidden treasure). Go often enough, like I do, and they get to know you and your selections. Happy hour $1 sushi during the week from 4:30 pm to 6 pm!

I'm sorry, but the sushi club perpetually smells like dead fish... never a good thing.

I know many Reno locals avoid the casinos like the plague, and I am starting to understand why after a year... But they can afford to throw away a lot of fish, where I doubt the "little guy" can.

Kokopelli's at Circus Circus has the best selection of fish, and no restrictions on all you can eat selections, if gorging yourself on high quality fish is a goal...

Atlantis Casino has a fine sushi bar with a lot of seating. I found the rice a bit firm one day I went there.

I have heard good things about Aloha Sushi but have not tried it. ( not in a casino)

    -Los Angeles-

Forget all those trendy sushi places in LA....

    Yamakasa!!
(so fresh, such a chic interior, wonderful chefs and owner)
Location: Corner of Highland and Franklin, in the strip mall (yes strip mall) with the Starbucks, before the Hollywood Bowl, after Hollywood and Vine.

You won't be disappointed on atmosphere or quality, ever.

Some of the best sushi I've ever had in my life is in Los Angeles, hard to believe.
    • Re: L.A.

      Fri, November 5, 2004 - 8:34 PM
Never been to Yamakasa. I know the stripmall you are talking about...

      Best of the Frigging Best:

Sushi Nozawa on Ventura Blvd near Tahunga: amazing sushi! I heard a rumor that the sushi natzi that runs the place was the inspiration for the Soup Natzi on Sienfield. This resturaunt makes the top 5 on the Zagat resturaunt guide for all of LA.

Matsuhisa: On La Cienega near Wilshire and the Stinking Rose. Amazing food!!! Owned by the infamous Nobu. This one will blow your socks off. Order the chef special!

      Noteworthy:

Sushi Roku (several around LA). Amazing. Modeled after Matsuhisa. Amazing chef special.

Nozawa is great but very expensive.

Matsuhisa (essentially the same as Nobu in NY) also has great sushi. It's a bit non-traditional and well respected for its house sushi and sashimi dishes and especially the very large menu of cooked foods. Pretty much for the expense account set. In the same price range although a bit arty and little less special in the food category is R-23 in the warehouse district of downtown LA.

Sushi Roku is pretty good, although the one in West Hollywood is too much of a scene for me. It's a sort of Matsuhisa-Lite in all respects.

The horribly named but excellent Sushi of Naples is a real treat (locations in Long Beach and Pasadena). Other more affordable places include Tama Sushi and Sushi Noshi (I'll have to check that name...it's not too far from Paramount Studios and serves large portions of pretty fresh and well made fish for very reasonable prices). Sake House Miro, too.

Sushi Iroha on Ventura Blvd. is kind of a fun place. It's sushi is not bad at all and it has some excellent appetizers, especially the scallop casserole dish.

LA may well have the best sushi outside of Japan, but you have to work for it, as the city is so sprawling and there are so many places. All of the places I've listed are rated from sitting at the sushi bar. I'm not sure about table service. And, sadly, the other patrons of my favorite sushi bar would kill me if I listed it here. But it's in Hollywood and not to hard to find if you really want it.

KOTO Sushi - (my fave) the best, and cheapest in town (owner says he priced it so students could eat there), large portions, service can sometimes lag

Jugem - Great sushi, but portions are small, and cost is high, service is good

Sapporo - Good sushi, but nothing special. HIGH prices. Service is good. Bartender knows his saki and can reccommend something for you.

    Seaside:

Iki Rikki (or something like that) - high prices, horrible sushi, horrible service, dont even know how to make a california roll right
    -------------------------------------
    Carmel by the Sea:

Miso - Very artistic sushi. Very nice decor. Very small place. Yummy sushi. Very high priced. Decent service.

There's another place next to the Sunset Center. It's ok... I remember it being kinda high priced... and something about not being able to trust their raw sushi - but you still see people eating it whenever you're in there, and they seem to be grooven off of it. ...and their lunch rice bowls were good and a good deal for the $ Get a salad and everything :)

There is one other place I've been to in Pacific Grove... It was GREAT. I dont remember what the prices were though. ...was a couple of years ago... first place I ate sushi. :)
Its around the Bank of America...

        Hey all!
i know seperate threads have been suggested, but
i kinda like just running though everyones replies. also if i ever go on a cross country tour- i can just print this sucker out :")

        so BOSTON..
Takeshema : coolidge corner . not only is the sushi always incredible & the staff just friendly as hell, ( a huge plus is this uptight town) the host jae has decorated everything with his amazing zany amine art.

Fugakyu: brookline . what a place! decorated like a japanese palace= rice paper screens, goldfish"pond" large and small dining rooms, bar and Lounge.. and and extremely creative sushi chef..great whe your feeling adventurous and decadent...the staff- though they are always cordial, never seem happy.( i wonder whats happening behind the scenes somtimes...)

Guyuhama: downtown great fish, good place!

          Thu, December 30, 2004 - 8:42 AM
Fugakyu is beautiful, but service can be great or not so great depending on how, well, far off one is seated, particularly upstairs. The sushi is generally excellent, though a little pricey. Ask about specials!

My favorite place is Oishii - there are two of them, both tiny. One's
at Chestnut Hill (really tiny - maybe 10 seats at bar, one *single* 4-seat
table) and the other (larger - maybe 6 tables?) is out in Sudbury. (There's also a Fugakyu in Sudbury!)

Unfortunately, neither of these is very convenient for me. I've been eating at Toraya in Arlington a bit lately, and it, too, is tiny, but everything is always excellent. I believe that the Itamae there is also the owner - the place is typically operated by just him plus one or two waitstaff, plus one or two folks in back.

Checked out Mijori twice in the last week; great sushi and some tasty fried oysters (7 for $4.50!) that are so light, not greasy at all. The place gets packed, Saturday get there early, and even weeknights around 8 gets busy.

I also like Koryo on Telegraph at about 45th in Koryo Station (next to the karioke place and the Korean grill); very fresh, and they have some good house specials. They are open really late, weeknights til about 2am, Fri-Sat til 3am or 4am (try finding that anywhere else in Oakland).

The Times just gave four stars to Masa, a sushi bar in the city - the first four star review in close to twenty years. It's a very sensuous review - I felt like I was reading porn. Check:

        ***************
A chef makes your sushi a piece or two at a time, reaching for a pristine slab of fluke or Spanish mackerel and using a bone-handled knife to carve a sliver. He presses wasabi or maybe shiso flakes onto a bed of warm rice, lays the fish atop it and then anoints this jewel with soy sauce, yuzu or sudachi, a limelike Japanese fruit.

From just inches away, you watch this ritual, which culminates in the chef's placing the sushi in front of you with a bare hand. You in turn use a bare hand to lift it to your lips. Now the chef watches you, palpably anticipating your delight. This whole exchange has an immediacy and intimacy unlike anything at more conventional restaurants or for that matter at other upscale sushi bars, which tend not to have Masa's low ratio of sushi priests to sushi supplicants, sometimes one to two, especially at lunch.

        **************************************

Oh how I want to go there. Though at 350 a meal [before sake and tips] I doubt I'll make it in this lifetime unless I have an affair with someone very very rich.

Would love to know if anhone has been there.

The link is here, but you need to register to read it.

We have had some fun at the Sushi Bar in the lobby of the Marriot Marquis in Times Square. That is where my wife tried Unagi for the first time and realized it does not taste like chicken!

At 105 S Elmhurst Road (also called Main Street) near the NE corner of Northwest Highway (US-14) and Elmhurst Road/Main Street (IL-83). This is a must stop for the sushi lover. Haven't been disapponted by anything. Staff will get to know you by name, favorite stop of local Japanese. Tell Toshiko that Kobi sent you!

Tokyo Bistro - St. Charles Ave./Garden District - very fresh, nice presentation; very accommodating; the best, in my opinion

Sake Cafe - Magazine St./Uptown - nice atmosphere, good sushi; lots of unique combinations

Mikimoto - S. Carrollton/Mid-City - $1 sushi; not the best, but great for the college budget; very greasy tempura; a menu with all their specialty rolls for the newbies

Ninja - Oak St./Uptown - can't say I've ever eaten there, but many people sewar by it

These are the joints I would reccommend. There are many more, but I really haven't the time to list them all.

      Spider Roll.
Sushi Den - Great food, can be slightly pricey but what good
      sushi isn't? :)

If you like pretentious, expensive "fusion" style sushi with a stuffy atmosphere, then Hapa in Cherry Creek.

SF; All Season Sushi Bar and Grill(Castro and 18th)

This little Sushi resturant seems plain but is absolutely wonderful. The Unagi, Hamachi, Uni, and Special rolls are especially good. I encourage all to try here, who are able and live in the area. It's the best I've had in the city so far.

Hands down the absolute best in NorCal! In fact...One of the best I've ever been to in my long life of sushi-fanaticism.

VERY reasonable prices, some of the best qulaity fish you'll find, perfect rice every time, and really, REALLY nice people! :)

That's in Rohnert Park to be specific! :)

Others may disagree, but just my 2 cents. These are the best of the best.

    Sushi Saka (Richardson on Collins)
Yutaka (Uptown just off of McKinney)
    Tei Tei (Henderson)
    Kampai (Addison)

    Others I will go to:
    Reiyku (Mockingbird Station)
    Cafe Japon (Addison)
    Masami (Richardson)
